Our School:

Our School “Region”:

The College is situated 36KM north of Adelaide and 32Km outside the Barossa Valley.

The Barossa Valley is rich in food from its famous vines to its olive groves, almond trees. wild mushrooms and regional food products. It is this gourmet aspect that we intend to tap into as well as examining the farming methods of the traditional hard working German community that established the success of the Barossa farming land.

Our Product:

Gourmet Organic Pies

The students of Trinity College already farm livestock (chickens, pigs, sheep and cows) as well as other established projects such as the production of wine, the herb garden, a vegetable patch and eggs. We intend to research with students the traditional farming practices of the Barossa community and combine our current projects and the Farm to Table Challenge to produce Gourmet Pies.

Our School Statement:

Trinity College is a multi-campus (five schools, 3500 students) coeducational Christian school with students from reception to year 12. The College also has a Montessori facility educating children from 3-5 years. Students from the College have a vast range of family circumstances and a wide range of social backgrounds.

The school prides itself as an educational facility, which strives to deliver excellence in the lives of its young people, and so it is envisaged the students will strive to achieve excellence in their own personal lives. Due to the nature of students attending the College social inclusion and socially inclusive practices will be at the forefront of this project. The aim will be to offer all our students the opportunity to participate at some point in the academic year.

Due to the high number of students within the five schools the challenge will be delivered to students in a cross curricular manner. All Agricultural, Hospitality and Catering students will contribute and The Challenge will also be offered as an after school club to any student interested. It is envisaged that the primary school classes will be involved in growing crops and we aim to link to science programs in the middle school. Students with special educational needs this year established an herb garden as one of their projects and cooked with the gardens produce. We are expecting that they will continue with the garden for 2005 and contribute to The Challenge.

Any student involved will also be able to participate in primary producing and processing in order to see the project through from beginning to end. This we believe will encourage students to take ownership of the challenge and encourage them to be responsible for it’s success. Our aim is to offer the project to the students as a means of connecting to the school community. We expect that this project may interest students who have not connected to other activities offered after school namely sport, music and drama.

We will also be calling upon the college community for help –there is lots out there! Requests will be made through School newsletters and the local newspapers for persons with an interest in the project and with skills that maybe valuable to contact the College to offer assistance. We will ask our regular supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables to be involved in the project particularly while our produce are growing and we are trialling!

The pies will be sold through various outlets in the community, including the school canteen newsletters and The Barossa Farmers Market. Profit made from the activity will be donated to a charity as voted on by the whole student community.

Good food and a love of live are intertwined. The fact that students that students will be responsible for something so special and so simple we believe will be fundamental to its success and the success of our young people.
