Bacon & Eggs

Finalist Year 7/8 Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Young Writer Competition
Emil Eddiehausen Aged 12 Year 7 Haileybury College Castlefield Campus Brighton
"The Best Meal I Ever Had – Bacon & Eggs"

Bacon and egg sandwich, hand made, slowly cooked, with hot chocolate, a good movie, rainy day, warm clothes, nothing to do, comfortable seat and no one at home to bother me. Yes that was the best meal I ever had and the best thing about it… I made it myself.

I started the day waking up early in the morning it was Saturday and time to make a bacon and egg sandwich. I started off as usual get the pan and put the oil in. I went to the fridge to get the bacon and egg only to find there was no bacon. I looked around the fridge but I could not see any bacon, it was terrible. It was only when I had got milk for the hot chocolate I found bacon. It was hiding behind the milk I said to my self “ Emil, you’re an idiot” I only said it because it was true I was an idiot.

I turned on the television to watch “Video Hits” because I don’t like quiet even when I’m trying to sleep I listen to music. I was singing, dancing and cooking at the same time it was a site to see (luckily no one was there to see it). While I was cooking the bacon I was shacking my bosom to the music, while I was heating the milk I was singing and while I was setting every thing up to look good I was doing both.

Time ticked away slowly the bacon cooked and slowly the eggs cooked slowly but the slower it went the hungrier I got. After half an hour my wait was over I had nearly done it all I had to do was pick a movie. I new that picking a movie take me over ten minuets so I put my bacon and egg sandwich in the oven so it would not get cold. I finally finished picking a movie “The Matrix”.

It was now time to eat the bacon hand egg sandwich but there was something wrong I didn’t feel like eating it I had worked so hard on it and it took so long to make. I felt like hanging it up on the wall and show every one. I finally picked it up I slowly put it to my mouth to take a big bite out of it. The smell made my mouth water I opened my mouth and I sank my teeth into the best thing I had ever tasted in my life. I chewed it slowly savoring the great taste, all that hard work paid off. I didn’t ever think of drinking my hot chocolate. Moments passed and the thing I had feared had come true the end. The end was sad it was like a friend you just met five minuets ago died it was terrible. As much as I had tried to avoid it, chewing slowly did not help with the last piece in my mouth I swallowed.

What the Judges said:
I like Emil’s conversational style and the fact that he appreciates his own cooking.
Story is very matter of fact but even so, I want to try one of Emil's brekkies!
A great beginning, middle and end. An attempt at suspense… would he eat it or not? And then the big climax. Well done.
