"The Best Meal I Ever Had"

The transporter tube deposited me at the door or “Arrivederci's Galaxy Restaurant", the most expensive, exclusive, and prestigious restaurant in the world. I had made this booking exactly four years, six months, and nine days ago. My taste buds were quivering with anticipation for the gastronomic delights which awaited them.

The Maitre d’ of the establishment greeted me with pompous solicitude and stalled ahead to lead me to my private booth. The table within was a sight to behold, shimmering crystal glasses sparkled in the candle light, the gleaming silver exuded opulence, the pristine snowy white table cloth was immaculate, and the fine bone china completed the extravagant setting.

As the Maitre d', with a graceful flick of his wrist, unfurled the serviette and draped it elegantly over my lap, my private waiter handed me the exquisitely scrolled and gilded menu. I perused the menu to the gentle strains of the chamber quartet. Regretting that | could not order all of the sumptuous dishes on the menu, I finally made my choice, to the approval of the waiter who recommended the most expensive and appropriate wine to compliment the dishes I had chosen.

After a short wait during which time I fantasised about the delights which awaited me, my entree arrived. The Oysters Kilpatrick arrived nestled in their shells surrounded by a bed of rock salt; the bacon was thinly sliced and crisped to perfection while the Worcestershire Sauce was drizzled lovingly over the oysters. Each oyster was delicate and succulent as it slipped into my mouth and down my throat. When I had finished, the waiter deftly removed the platter and placed a lemon scented finger bowl in front of me.

I sipped the fragrant wine and pondered why I could not eat like this every night. My magnificent minestrone soup arrived and I spent a minute savouring the wonderful aroma. Each individual piece of vegetable had been sliced to the perfect shape and size with absolute care. The flavour was exquisite, robust and yet intricate, with a zest and piquancy only achieved by true Italian master chefs. The accompanying warm crusty bread was of a luscious light texture and seemed to melt in my mouth.

As the main course arrived, the chamber quartet was now playing a Mozart prelude, the perfect accompaniment to my Filet Mignon. The waiter placed the dish in front of me, I could not have imagined a more mouth-watering and delectable repast. My silver knife sliced into the tender, juicy meat. It was cooked to the absolute pinnacle of excellence, I chewed slowly and savoured every mouthful with complete bliss; it was a taste sensation of unrivalled indulgence. The rich gravy was textured like velvet cream, the golden roasted potatoes were seasoned with aromatic herbs, and the steamed vegetables were bursting with flavour. When I had consumed the final mouthful I was tempted to lick my plate, however the fact that I was in a world class restaurant made me think better of it.

The effervescent wine I was sipping refreshed and cleansed my palate in anticipation of dessert; the chef's speciality, chocolate souffle. The souffle was the "piece de resistance", it defied gravity in the way it seemingly floated over the rim of the bowl, and the delicate chocolate flavour was a sensuous delight. The accompanying dollop of luscious double cream contrasted perfectly with the delicacy of the souffle.

My exquisite dinner was completed with a fragrant brazilian latte. On the side was a delectable mint chocolate. As I drank the coffee, replete in the magnificence of the meal, I reminisced, longing to be able to experience it again one day.

The waiter arrived and ceremoniously handed me the bill on a delicate golden platter:

What the Judges said:
Very clever concept but falls down because of repetitive descriptive words, spelling errors (see if you can spot them) and not much use of imagery.
Great idea, loved the concept, didn’t quite take me there though
A strong control of the subject and great attention to detail. The punch-line was slightly buried for me at first reading but I found it highly original and mouth-watering to read. Well done.
