JMC Episode 13 & 14

Fruit, Pheasant or fish, take your pick as the last eight contestants battle it out to see if their cuisine reigns supreme (d'oh sorry wrong show), we meant to see who could bake, roast, fry, shop and chef their way into the top four.

Looking at all those interesting fruits got YG thinking about plants and their plant life-cycle (and then we got all misty eyed remembering how cute Simba the Lion King was as we hummed the first few bars of "the circle of life....")

interesting ingredients

Pomegranate SeedsIt is hard for anyone to use the very stinky Durian in a recipe because it is hard to concentrate when you a dry wretching. For a tropical lemon tang, you could use Mangosteen, or for something totally awesome, try growing Pomegranate (download the PDF fact sheet at the bottom of the page), then see how far you can spit the seeds after you've sucked all that delicious pink sweet juice.

Murray Cod is Australia's largest native freshwater fish. In the good 'ol days you could catch one from the banks of the mighty Murray River using a bardie-grub on a hook. Now days, the Murray Cod served up in restaurants is produced by aquaculture farms.

recipes & things to try

Go fishing in the sea or drag and adult with loads of money down to your local seafood market and buy up big and make an awesome Bouillabasse, we have an easy recipe from Peter Kuravita you can download and try at the bottom of this page.

history, cuisine & culture

Right now (November) is Pheasant hunting season in the USA and there are a few organisations like Pheasants Forever that keep both the habitat and tradition going strong. hunting is a bit brutal for YG so we always check where our pheasants are from and if we get one with feathers, we always say this tongue teaser when we are plucking "I'm not the pheasant plucker, I'm the pheasant plucker's mate, And I'm only plucking pheasants 'cause the pheasant plucker's late. I'm not the pheasant plucker, I'm the pheasant plucker's son, And I'm only plucking pheasants till the pheasant pluckers come."
